PTR and PTS exclude GST. Margins are taken on the price before GST, which is how the trade works it out for branded and PCD ranges.
What is PTR?
PTR, or Price to Retailer, is what a chemist pays the stockist or distributor for one pack, without GST. It is the MRP minus GST, minus the retailer's margin.
What is PTS?
PTS, or Price to Stockist, is what the stockist pays the pharma company, without GST. It is the PTR minus the stockist's margin. For a marketing company this is the number that matters, because it is what you actually get paid.
PTR and PTS formulas
Worked example: MRP ₹100, GST 5%, retailer 20%, stockist 10%. MRP excl. GST ₹95.24 → PTR ₹76.19 → PTS ₹68.57. If your third party rate is ₹32 a pack, your profit is ₹36.57 per pack, or 53% of PTS.
Why the GST factor matters
MRP includes GST, but trade margins are calculated on the price before tax. Skipping the GST step overstates PTR and PTS, and a range priced that way leaves less margin than the price list suggests.
Typical margins in pharma
| Type | Retailer margin | Stockist margin |
|---|---|---|
| Branded / ethical | ~20% | ~10% |
| PCD and third party brands | 20–30% | 10–15% |
| Trade generics | Often higher, set by the company | Often higher |
Margins on scheduled formulations are subject to NPPA / DPCO rules. This is a pricing aid, not legal or tax advice.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between PTR and PTS?
PTR (Price to Retailer) is what a chemist pays the stockist for one pack, excluding GST. PTS (Price to Stockist) is what the stockist pays the company, excluding GST. PTS is lower than PTR by the stockist margin.
How do I calculate PTR from MRP with GST?
Take out GST first: MRP ÷ (1 + GST%). Then deduct the retailer margin. With MRP ₹100, 5% GST and a 20% retailer margin: 100 ÷ 1.05 = ₹95.24, and 95.24 × 0.80 = ₹76.19 PTR.
How is PTS calculated from PTR?
PTS = PTR − (PTR × stockist margin %). With PTR ₹76.19 and a 10% stockist margin, PTS = ₹68.57.
What are the standard retailer and stockist margins in pharma?
For branded generics and PCD ranges the retailer margin is usually around 20% and the stockist margin around 10% on PTR. Trade generics often run higher. The NPPA trade margin rules apply to some scheduled formulations.
What GST rate should I use for medicines?
Since 22 September 2025 most medicines are taxed at 5% GST; notified life-saving drugs are exempt. Use the rate for your product's HSN code.
How do I set the MRP for a third party manufactured product?
Use the "Find MRP" mode: enter the PTS you want to receive and the margins. It works back to the MRP including GST. Add your third party rate to see your profit per pack.
